The Secret Passage

Chapter Thirty-Seven:

Harry had to admit the prison guards had been very thorough in their inspection of Dracos cell. Nothing was amiss. Just the fact that Draco wasnt sitting in it leering at them seemed to be the only odd thing. Tonks was frowning as she used her wand over the cell, trying to pick up trace remnants of any possible spells that had been used.

This is the oddest thing, she said as she sighed, lowering her arm. If I didnt know any better Id swear someone had the master key and simply let him out.

Could someone have slipped something to him? Has he had any visitors? Remus asked.

Harry looked down at the parchment the guard had given him. No, none since... er... Pansy Parkinson paid him visit, but that was over 4 months ago. No one after that.

Remus shook his head. I dont think that Draco would be the type to wait four months to break out if he had the key in his hand, do you?

Not to mention the whole concept of Parkinson even having it to begin with are so beyond slim its unthinkable, Tonks said.

Harry felt frustrated. Again the feeling that they were missing something nibbled at him. He leaned against the wall and looked at his friends.

So what are we saying here? Either Draco Malfoy has been fooling us all and he really is a brilliant wizard who waited around for four years to escape or...

He had the key, Tonks said, looking as though she didnt believe it either.

Remus walked around in the cell and looked deep in thought. Harry felt a headache coming on. He didnt want to be staring at these dank dark walls anymore. He wanted to be on the boat ride home. Home to Ginny. He kicked at the wall in frustration.

Tonks, give me that map again, he said as he reached out for the map he hadnt looked at yet. She handed it to him and he unfolded it.

Maybe someone came to the island and helped him escape? Remus muttered and Tonks looked at him.

Thats almost as impossible as the other scenarios. Wed know if someone had been out here. Visitors arent actually an every day thing.

Harry let his eyes travel around the map, picking out the places he knew by sight.

Remus continued. Well, lets just say for one moment that someone, however hard it is to imagine, did make it out here and he or she did have the key. It would explain how Draco got out, how they took care of the Giant and how Draco got off the island as well.

Tonks was shaking her head again. Thats a lot of assuming there, Remus. How did this person get the key, first of all? Then, how did they get out here? Not to mention howd they come up to the prison without anyone seeing them? There are Warning Spells all over the island, youd know it if someone just came waltzing up, trying to get in. I reckon you could get around the spells, but-

As Remus and Tonks argued it out, Harry let his eyes travel to the far right corner of the map. He noticed the word, Addendum in small tight lettering. With a frown, he reached for his wand and tapped it by instinct, thinking briefly of his old Marauder's Map. Harry watched in amazement as the map suddenly expanded and grew in his hands. It now showed a whole aspect of the island that Harry had never known was there.

But its not impossible to get to this island, Tonks, I mean... it can be done. And if you really think about it, someone could probably get around it fairly easily too, if they really wanted to. People have even been known to get off the island too.

I know, but Sirius was a very special case. This is Malfoy were talking about-

Harry cleared his throat and the two stopped to look at him. He held up the map and walked over to them. They looked at it over his shoulder.

Whered that come from-

I dont believe it-

Harry nodded. He looked at his friends. It seems you were right, Remus, its not impossible for people to get around this island. Id say this was a glaring example of the Ministry forgetting a few things.

For the addition to the map had shown them all a simple, irrefutable truth. There was a way to get in and out of the prison and if you had something simple, say something like an invisibility cloak, Harry thought to himself, you could go and do almost anything and no one would be any the wiser that you had been there.

There was a secret passage under the right side of the prison and it led directly to the door of the hallway that had held Draco Malfoys cell.

***

Ginny said goodbye to the Ministry driver as Ron saw Hermione into the Burrow. Her father had arranged for someone to drive them back and forth to London, since Hermione didnt have an okay to Apparate in her weakened state yet. Ginny wondered where the driver would go, since her parents house was still out in the middle of nowhere, but before she could watch it disappear over the hill, her mother was calling to them from the door.

Hurry up you lot! I almost gave up on you two. The guests of honor being late to their own party, honestly...

Ginny lingered outside as the throng of Weasleys and friends greeted Hermione and Ron inside. It was only 6:00pm. The party wasnt supposed to begin for another hour. Harry had plenty of time to make it back.

Then why are you worried?

Ginny shook her head and tried to clear her head. The pills Hermione had given her had worked on her headache but she now felt uncertain. Something didnt feel right, but since Ginny could only assume it was because of her earlier emotions, she let the feeling go. She really needed to make more of an effort to meditate more. Professor Miracroix would be very cross with her if she knew how bad shed been at keeping herself grounded.

But its not every week that you fall madly, deliriously in love is it though? Its not every week you finally get your hearts desire.

Ginny looked out at the setting sun and smiled. She knew Harry would be back soon. He wouldnt let her down, nor would he let Ron and Hermione down either. As for the past and all the mistakes shed thought about today, well, that could just follow the sun right out of sight. She had no use for things that made her unhappy, after all. Her family was safe and sound. She saw their strength as she greeted her brothers and kissed her mother hello. She knew that she was a part of that strength, that it was inside of her, even if she sometimes forgot it. No, all that mattered now was the future. And all she saw in that was she and Harry together.

Ginny should have remembered that even for a seer, the future is sometimes very hard to know for sure.

We should check it out, youll know she ask, Harry said as they stood in front of the entrance to the secret passage.

Remus nodded. I know. Amelia Bones is nothing if thorough. Shell expect a full report. Its just I know you wanted to make it back for Ron and Hermiones party-

Harry nodded. Yeah, I want us all to get back for it. But we have to at least go through it once, see if we spot any clues. Although judging from the lack we found in the cell, Im not expecting much.

Tonks came over with one of the guards, looking at the map.

Right, well, to make this go quicker, why dont two of us enter from the outside and two of us head this way.

Harry nodded. It sounded like a plan to him. They made plans to meet in the middle somewhere. He turned toward the darkened entranceway and lit his wand. It didnt improve the gloomy view any. He looked back at Remus who had also lit his wand. Tonks and the guard were moving to the outside entrance, which was about half a mile along the right side.

As Harrys eyes grew accustomed to the dark, he found that the further in they went, the more slippery the floor seemed to grow. It was too narrow for more than one person and Remus had to stay behind him. At this rate it would take them forever to walk the whole way and Harry had a feeling theyd be just as clueless about things as when theyd started.

His mind turned to Draco and whoever had set this up. It was obviously someone who had seen the plans for the island, had noticed the Addendum and decided to use it. If the master key had been used, then how? And more importantly, why? Who would want Draco Malfoy out? Crabbe and Goyle were both dead. Malfoy had no other friends, really, other than Pansy Parkinson and Harry couldnt quite see this great plan coming from her. Harry thought about Narcissa Malfoy and put the thought out of his head. After the death of Lucius, Narcissa had decided reality was a bit too much for her. As far as Harry knew she was well looked after in a Sanitarium somewhere off the Scottish coastline. Tonks would probably know more, as Narcissa was still technically an aunt. His foot slipped on a particularly wet area and he almost fell before Remus reached out and grabbed him.

Alright there Harry?

Harry stopped and rubbed at his leg, hed hit it on one of the rocks. Yeah, just... this passageway isnt exactly fun, is it?

The older man tried to chuckle but it turned into a cough. No, its not. Bit steep too.

Harry turned and looked at him. Are you okay?

Remus offered a small smile. Fine.

Listen, why dont I go on ahead and you rest-

Im fine, Harry.

Harry nodded and turned back around. He wasnt going to argue with him, but Lupin did look out of breath for some reason. Maybe it was the thin air in the passageway.

They continued on in silence, their footsteps being swallowed by the ever-pressing darkness. Harrys arm ached from holding his wand and he began to wonder why they hadnt come across Tonks and the guard yet. Surely they were almost half way by now?

Almost in answer to his question, they came upon a small opening in the passageway, a spot where you could at least stand side by side with someone. Harry waited as Lupin coughed into his robe sleeve and caught his breath. Harry looked around with his wand and frowned.

Suddenly behind them they heard sounds, as though someone else was making their way through the passageway. They heard a crashing noise as though rocks had fallen and then a curse. Remuss eyes shot up and he turned his head.

That sounded like Tonks, he said, still breathless.

Harry nodded and called out. Tonks? Is that you?

A muffled noise came next followed by a fit of coughing. Yeah, its me, although I think I just broke my ankle when I slipped. Bloody hell.

Remus turned immediately and headed back the way they had come. As the light of his wand splashed over the surrounding area, Harry caught a glance of something sparkling in the light. He paused a moment and focused his own wand over the same area and saw it again. He moved forward and squatted down in front of it. It was a series of red stones, seemingly buried into the boulder of rock they were passing through. With a nimble hand Harry reached out and touched the first of the stones. It shimmered as he touched it. It was very odd to find stones like this, and Harry had never quite seen anything like them. For some reason he felt compelled to try to remove them from the wall. Gripping his hand around the largest one, Harry tugged at it, expecting it to be deeply wedged into the boulder. Instead, the stone popped out into his hand, easily, as though it had just been waiting for him.

As Harry looked down at it, the stone seemed to glow hot for a moment and then went dark, as though touching it had deactivated it. He heard Remus calling for him then and he turned toward the passageway.

Harry? Come quickly, Tonks has managed to get her leg stuck-

Remuss voice was drowned out by a low rumbling. Harry turned back towards the other stones and his eyes widened. The other stones were now glowing like the one in his hand had done and one by one Harry watched as they suddenly went dark. The rumbling noise grew deeper and louder and Harry suddenly had a very bad feeling. Dropping the stone from his hand he turned and headed back up the passageway, yelling at Remus and Tonks.

Hold on to something guys, I think were about to-

Harry never finished his sentence as the loud crack of the explosion whipped through the small clearing. Harry felt himself pushed forward from the blast and he tried to protect himself as he slammed into the side of the rock. The left side of his body exploded with pain and Harry had the dim thought that something must have broken and broken well. The entire passageway seemed to be moving and Harry felt more rocks falling over him. He dropped down to his stomach, half-dizzy from the concussion that surely must be rolling through his head. Trying to stay conscious he whispered the first spell that popped into his head and made the falling rocks halt their progress. Harry watched as the rocks floated above him and he tried to pull himself out from under them. He needed to get away, through the passageway or hed die down here, buried under mountains of falling rocks. His head throbbing and the left side of his body screaming under the protest of moving,he dragged himself upward with his right arm. The air was thick with the smell of dust and dirt and Harry found it impossible to breathe. He coughed and tried to call out to Remus and Tonks but his voice was useless as more dust entered his lungs. Suddenly he heard another rumbling sound and Harry felt real anger course through his body. He was not going to get buried alive down here under Azkaban prison. With a determination that had saved his life countless times before, Harry bit his lip as he forced himself to use his left arm to pull himself further along. Gut-wrenching pain flared through his body and Harry felt as though he had been hit with the Cruciatus Curse. He heard an explosion behind him and didnt even stop to look. The ground shook beneath him and he pushed himself up, using his right hand. He forced himself to stand. He heard something splinter as he stood on his left leg and fell against the wall of the passageway, gasping. Whatever had been wrong with his left side before was nothing to what it felt like now. Using his wand, Harry cast a Protection spell behind him and watched as it wavered for a moment and then held. He slumped backwards against the wall and finally felt the throbbing in his head over-take him.

His last thought before passing out was that he would have liked to have told Ginny again that he loved her. Just one more time.

***

Seven oclock came and went and the Weasley-Granger engagement party was going strong. George and Fred, after teasing their younger brother ceaselessly had finally succumbed to the threats of disownment from their mother and had decided to turn their attention to more pressing matters. Namely, the two single medi-witches Hermione had had the foresight to invite.

Hermione and Ron of course, were holding court in the main drawing room, with Hermione sitting on the sofa, blushing and showing off her ring. Ron beamed happily beside her and Ginny couldnt remember the last time she had seen everyone look as pleased with themselves as they did tonight. She realized it had been too long since the family had all been together- she was startled to realize that the last time theyd all truly been together had been Percys funeral. So in a way, it was too long since theyd all had reasons to be happy at the same time. Bill and Charlie were talking with her father about Ministry business, Neville and Susan had come and were talking with her Mum about the garden, which was lit with small faerie lights and transfigured hydrangea plants that winked into light as you walked by them.

Ginny pulled her robe closer around her and went into the garden now, needing to feel the cool summer breeze on her face. It was quieter outside and she could give her mind some much needed room.

Hes just late, thats all. Hes probably already on the way back right now.

Ginny couldnt shake the feeling that something was wrong. Her feeling of uncertainty had not passed from before and it worried her more than she liked. She shook her head and pulled the stone she kept around her neck out of its pouch.

A cry of hellos echoed out of the house and Ginny turned, expectantly, but it was only Dean Thomas and Alicia Spinnet. Still no sign of Harry. Or Remus and Tonks. It somehow didnt feel like a party without them.

Ginny?

She turned and saw Bill watching her from the doorway and she smiled at her older brother.

It got crowded in there, she said simply, although he hadnt asked what she was doing outside all alone.

Bill smiled and came to join her. Yeah, especially since George and Fred just got a few people to turn into canaries.

Ginny groaned and laughed. I cant believe they still get people to fall for that trick!

Well, by this point I think Neville just plays along, Bills eyes sparkled and he chuckled.

Ginny shook her head. Poor Neville.

Actually, poor George and Fred, I think Susan is in there threatening to turn them into newts. She looks dead serious about it too.

Ginny reflected on the ferocity on which Susan had greeted her the other night and nodded in understanding.

Susans very protective of Neville.

Bill didnt say anything for a moment and then he turned to her. No more than you were, I imagine.

Ginny shrugged and looked upwards, towards the sky. It was cloudy and dark and Ginny suddenly wanted to be able to see the stars, to check their positions. It was an old divination habit of hers that shed never stopped.

You worried about Harry? Bill asked her, following her gaze upwards. Dad told me about Draco getting out. I suppose Amelia would have to put Harry on the case, wouldnt she? Seeing as hes the reason Draco was put away to begin with.

Ginny nodded. Yeah. I understand it. I just dont have to like it. I know he can take of himself. But somehow I have a feeling we have other things to worry about-

Ginny was cut off by her father popping his head out of the door.

Ah, Ginny there you are. This letter just came by owl for you.

Ginny took the letter and by the light of one of the hydrangea plants, read the note in astonishment.

Ginny? What is it?

She blinked up at her father and brother. Winifred Eaton has... well, shes awake. Amelia wants me to go and question her immediately.

Want someone to come with you?

Ginny shook her head. No, Ill be fine. Just... if Harry comes while Im gone, tell him Ill be back as soon as possible, okay?

Her father nodded and Bill gave her a brief hug. She called after them.

And tell Hermione and Ron Ill be back before they open the presents!

Ginny disapparated. A few moments later another owl arrived, but this one was for Arthur. As he read the letter, Bill had to ask his father what was wrong. The elder Weasley shook as he folded it. The party talk quieted as people noticed how pale his face had gone. Ron and Hermione looked at him from the sofa, concerned.

Oh, dear.

Dad, what is it?

Theres been... an explosion at Azkaban. Apparently Tonks, Remus and Harry were trapped in some passageway theyd found.

Are they okay? Ron asked, getting up from the sofa.

Tonks and Remus were pulled out... theyre being taken to St. Mungos. Oh dear, your sister. Bill-

Bill nodded and grabbed his cloak from the coat rack by the door. Ill go warn her.

Hermione who had also stood up from the couch looked at Mr. Weasley, her face pink with worry. And Harry?

Arthur looked down at the letter and shook his head. It didnt mention Harry, apparently hes still... missing.

***

Louis Fagan made sure that Draco was locked up tight in his new room. Hed wanted the man out of Azkaban, but not out running amok. At least, not yet. Louis didnt trust Draco to do what he wanted. Thinking about it and smiling to himself at the thought, if Potter was as curious as hed heard, he might not have needed Draco at all. He wondered briefly how long it would be before he heard if his little trick in the passageway had worked...

Louis went back to visit Mandy. Ah, hed been neglecting her, hadnt he? Well, that wouldnt do at all. She whimpered as he entered the room, her eyes still blindfolded, although the rest of her was perfect. His partner had prepared her well.

Whats the matter, love, feeling frightened? he whispered to her, his voice traveling across the room to her. Mandy shivered visibly but her whimpering had stopped.

He crossed over to the bed shed been tied to and let his hand reach out to touch her hair. Like red silk it fell through his fingers. He bent his head down to her ear.

I wish you could see how lovely you look, my dear. Maybe then you wouldnt have fought it so much.

Who are you, she whispered, her voice thick with fear.

Louis tutted under his breath and let his hand travel down the front of her, his hands undoing the buttons of her robe.

Why my dear, Im shocked. Dont you recognize your worse nightmare when you see him?

He reached up and removed her blindfold and her eyes were wild as she looked around the room. When they settled on him, they widened.

Her fear unlocked something deep inside Louis. It fed him like oxygen or food. He felt powerful then, as he always did, when they cowered like that. He laughed with glee and pulled the robe from her body, revealing the dress shed been put into. Mandy tried to push herself away from him, but she couldnt. Louis felt himself become giddy with something close to joy. His mind reeled backwards as he remembered another girl and another time. Mandy twisted under his touch and stared at him, a flicker of defiance in her eyes.

Aye, thats a girl, Louis said softly. Yes, please, lets make this interesting. Fight me all you want. I like it when you fight... Ginny.
